Bord na Móna plans to build a fossil fuel-free headquarters for Newbridge

Bord na Móna has unveiled plans for a new multi-storey headquarters in Co Kildare, which will be constructed primarily of wood to reduce its carbon footprint.

Dublin-based Plus Architecture, which has won the competition to design the Newbridge office, said the structure would be predominantly timber, with the use of concrete and steel to a minimum.

Bord na Móna said they consulted 240 staff for their design input, including a gym, a "mother" room, a sensory room, a space for prayer or meditation, and gender-neutral toilets and showers.

Tom Donnellan, CEO, who joined the company in 2018, said: "As a climate solutions company, we expect Newbridge's new headquarters to meet the highest standards in energy efficiency, waste management and biodiversity.

"Our new headquarters, targeted for BER A2, will be afossil fuel-free building, with on-site renewable energy generation and a high-efficiency heating system."

Irish native plants will be used in the exterior landscaping to promote biodiversity in the urban environment and create vibrant spaces for visitors.

Minister of State Martin Hayden said the plans would be brought to Kildare Local Council in a "vote of confidence" for the town.
