According to foreign media reports, the European garlic industry has asked the EU to end China's "dumping" of garlic and to control frozen garlic exported to Europe with "exceeding quotas and low tariffs".Relevant industry groups pointed out that because the garlic is not actually frozen, it is only stored in containers at -4°C and sold as fresh garlic in Europe.

The above point of view was put forward at a recent meeting of the agriculture ministries of Spain, Italy and France in Toulouse, France. The next meeting of the Joint Committee on Fruit and Vegetables will be held in Lisbon, Portugal on May 31, as a preparatory meeting for the annual event.

"They (China) sell below our cost, so we hope Prove to the EU that this practice is 'dumping'. The cost of freezing garlic is almost four euros (about 28.07 yuan), and Chinese garlic costs only one euro (about 7.02 yuan), so we hope the EU will stop these products into Europe.”

In addition, the industry has expressed concern about the behaviour of some retailers such as supermarkets in the EU.They "falsified" the garlic labels and changed the origin of Chinese garlic to Italy or Spain. To that end, the industry is working with labs in Spain and France "to try to expose this fraud".

Regarding the current garlic prices in the European market, he pointed out that the stocks in Spain, France and Belgium are currently insufficient. Therefore, he stressed, "demand is strong and the market is doing quite well, but we are still waiting to learn more about prices for the new season in China and the accompanying terms of trade," which, after all, accounts for 83 percent of global garlic production.
