BrusselsAirlines, the Belgian subsidiary of Lufthansa, cancelled nearly 700 flights, or about 6 percent of scheduled flights, during the summer holiday, the airline said today, in an effort to reduce workload and avoid strikes .

"We are meeting the union's demands today and we hope it precludes further action (this summer),"BrusselsAirlines spokesman Maaike Andries wrote in an email."For a long-term solution, we will organize a meeting with unions on August 23." The airline added that the cancellation would result in a loss of 10.2 million euros (RM47 million) in revenue.

BrusselsAirlines pilots and cabin crew unions staged a three-day strike last month after complaining of too much pressure at work, a situation the company has been aware of for about a year but has failed to ease.

Strikes and staff shortages across Europe are forcing airlines to cancel thousands of flights, leading to hours-long queues at major airports, dashing hopes for a first summer vacation after the coronavirus lockdown.
